Warm Mix Asphalt
Boggs uses Astec’s Double Barrel Green system to produce Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA). WMA is produced by using water to create foam out of the liquid asphalt cement used to coat the aggregate instead of superheating the cement, therefore reducing fuel consumption and gas production. Paving projects using WMA achieve compaction faster because the mat is already cool enough to use rollers right away. Also, WMA has a very high rate of success in using higher percentages of RAP, thereby reducing the cost of the product.
Hot Mix Asphalt
Hot Mix Asphalt is comprised of a couple of materials: liquid asphalt cement or binder, which is the petroleum product that holds the pavement together, and aggregates, which are various sized stones, gravel and/or sand. Hot Mix Asphalt is produced by drying and heating aggregates, then mixing and coating them with liquid asphalt cement or binder. This is the most commonly used mix in the paving industry today.
Cold Mix Asphalt
Cold Mix Asphalt is a polymer-modified material used for patching potholes, utility cuts, edge repairs, overlays and logistically challenging paved areas. A cold patch does not require heating nor does it need to be applied with paving equipment. It’s a sticky asphalt mix that when applied and tamped, seals and dries to a hard finish, very similar to hot mix asphalt. It can also be applied through standing water, which makes it ideal for use during the winter months and rainy seasons.
